Subject-verb-complement agreement

It was already seen above how the two first parts of this agreement is. Now, let's see how the complement should be.

Complements refer to:

  • places
  • time
  • frequency
  • people
  • days, months, years

The verb should be coherent with the complement; it means that, if it is intended that the complement refers to a place, the verb should refer to an action performed at a place.

Example:

Carlos trabaja en el hospital
Carlos works at the hospital

As seen before, the complement "en el hospital", matches the verb "trabajar", which can also be coherent with some other complements of time, frequency, etc.

Practice

Read the sentences. Observe the coherence between verbs conjugated and complements.

Mary estudia en la escuela
Mary studies at school

Carolina come a las 9:00 de la mañana
Carolina eats at 9:00 in the morning

David y Luis trabajan juntos
